Rugged and reliable in the field
Transducers for outdoor applications

In field applications, robust, interference-resistant signal processing is essential: humidity, dust, vibration, and fluctuating temperatures must not affect the measured values. Our transducers for outdoor applications condition the sensor signal directly on-site and provide stable Current or voltage outputs to the control system. This ensures that position measurement remains reproducible even under harsh environmental conditions.

Designed to withstand weather, vibration, and electromagnetic interference

Our Novotechnik transducers are designed for field use in demanding environments. Engineered for outdoor use, these models combine sealed housings (die-cast aluminum with IP66 protection) with vibration-resistant mechanics and rugged electronics.

The EMC-optimized design improves immunity to interference in environments containing hydraulic power units, frequency converters, or radio modules. The typical supply voltage is 24 V DC; outputs include 0–10 V, ±10 V, 0–20 mA, and 4–20 mA. Installation close to the sensor shortens cable runs and reduces interference—especially during dynamic movements.

Practical example and areas of application

As a practical example, let’s consider position measurement for gap monitoring on structures, such as bridges. The transmitter is mounted in an exposed location near the sensor, conditions the potentiometer’s output signal, and supplies a 4–20 mA signal to the user’s signal processing system. The advantage: stable readings despite vibration, temperature fluctuations, and long cables to the PLC. This also makes them ideal for use in mobile machinery (construction, agriculture, forestry), infrastructure, and outdoor test benches, as well as in energy and environmental technology.

Your benefits

  • High protection ratings
  • EMC- and vibration-resistant design
  • 0–10 V, ±10 V, 0–20 mA, and 4–20 mA for PLCs, with optional galvanic isolation
  • Installation close to the sensor for better signal quality
  • Wide ambient temperature ranges

FAQ

  • Is 4–20 mA generally better than 0–10 V in the field?
In harsh EMC environments and with long cables, 4–20 mA is usually more robust. With short, shielded wiring, 0–10 V can be a good choice.
  • What protection rating do I need?
That depends on the exposure and installation location. Generally, IP66 is a good choice.
