Sensor Solutions for Railway Technology

Sensors used in railway technology must operate reliably over the long term—despite vibrations, temperature fluctuations, humidity, and long service lives. The requirements for precision, robustness, and availability are correspondingly high, as many functions are safety-critical. Our rotary and linear position sensors support a wide range of applications: from door level adjustment and speed displays to measurement and control tasks in plumbing, HVAC, and utility systems. Their robust design and high measurement accuracy ensure safe and reliable operation in rail transport for many years.

Usage

Active lateral centering in the ICE 3

Product

Contactless linear position transducers, TM1 series
In Deutsche Bahn’s high-speed ICE (Intercity-Express) trains, contactless linear position transducers are installed linear position transducers in the drive cylinder of the active lateral centering system. These sensors precisely detect the current position, thereby enabling continuous control of the system. When traveling through curves, lateral accelerations occur that shift the car body out of its spring-centered mid-position. At higher speeds, this deflection can reach the permissible limits and result in noticeable jolts that reduce ride comfort. In extreme situations, travel safety can even be compromised. Active lateral centering counteracts these forces and keeps the car body in a stable central position. This maintains passenger comfort even as the train’s speed increases. At the same time, the system enables higher travel speeds, resulting in shorter travel times.

Usage

Track-laying system

Product

linear position transducers potentiometric linear position transducers, LWX series
Strong vibrations, moisture, dust, and extreme temperature fluctuations in outdoor applications do not affect the performance of the potentiometric displacement transducer in the rugged LWX series. In a mobile track-laying machine, this sensor measures the penetration depth of the spikes used to secure the rails. The spikes are driven in pneumatically; the linear position transducers mounted directly on the outside of the hammer cylinder.

Usage

Snow removal equipment for railroad tracks

Product

Non-contact linear position transducers, TM1 series
A snow-clearing device removes snow from the railroad tracks and ensures that train service can be maintained reliably even in winter conditions. To ensure the device operates safely, both its position on the track and the lateral position of the two clearing units must be precisely adjusted. The position on the rail and the lateral position of the two snowplows are adjusted by hydraulic cylinders and controlled using built-in non-contact position sensors.
