Mobile work machines

Rugged and reliable sensors for mobile machinery such as construction, agricultural, and forestry equipment, as well as industrial trucks.

Mobile work machines

Sensor solutions for mobile machinery

Mobile machinery is exposed to extreme conditions—from drastic temperature fluctuations and moisture to dirt, vibrations, and intense sunlight. Novotechnik’s sensors are designed precisely for this purpose: They operate reliably in temperature ranges from –55 °C to +140 °C, meet protection ratings up to IP69K, and are tested under real-world conditions that significantly exceed standard requirements—including combined stresses from temperature, moisture, and media.

Usage

Remote-controlled manipulator

Product

Contactless angle sensors, RSM-2800 series
A remote-controlled manipulator is used to reach dangerous objects from a safe distance in the event of a bomb threat. It allows objects to be inspected or grasped even in confined or hard-to-reach areas, such as luggage compartments or under airplane seats. To ensure that the vehicle can move safely and precisely to the site of the operation, the position of the so-called flippers must be detected. These flippers consist of a combination of wheel drive and chain and significantly determine the vehicle’s mobility. Magnetic multiturn sensors from the RSM 2800 series are used for this position determination. They are installed on each of the four drive axles and continuously provide precise measurement values, enabling reliable control of the manipulator.

Usage

Automatic apple harvester

Product

Non-contact angle sensors, RFC-4800 series
The automatic apple harvester collects up to 100 tons of windfall apples per day. To do this, the machine drives between the rows of trees, picks up the apples from the ground using an 800-millimeter-wide collection head, and cleans them in a single pass. The fruit is then fed into an integrated hopper with a capacity of three tons. To ensure that the apple harvester can move safely and precisely through the narrow aisles between the fruit trees, an all-terrain four-wheel steering system is used. Full synchronization of the front and rear axles requires reliable detection of their respective positions. This task is handled by the RFC 4800 series of non-contact angle sensors, which continuously provide accurate measurements and thus enable precise steering.

Usage

harvesting vehicle

Product

Non-contact angle sensors, RFD-4000 series
For use in harvesting vehicles, sensors must meet several requirements simultaneously. They must operate reliably and with high accuracy under the harsh conditions of harvesting operations. At the same time, non-contact measurement is essential to prevent wear and ensure a long service life. Since many machines have limited installation space, the sensors must also be compact and easy to integrate. Magnetic angle sensors from the RFD 4000 series detect the position of the transfer joints on a potato transporter. In the cleaning unit, the structurally identical, linear-measuring TFD 4000 variant is used to monitor the distance between the rollers. Both sensor types provide precise measurement values and help reliably control the material flow and cleaning quality during harvest.

Usage

Contactless angle measurement on the rotating axis of the basket arm joint

Product

Non-contact angle sensors, RFC-4800 series
A fully automatic hydraulic turntable ladder with an operating height of 32 meters and a basket arm that can be angled up to 75 degrees is a typical example from the wide range of modern aerial rescue platforms and fire department ladders. To ensure that a rescue operation runs smoothly, the tilt angle of the basket arm must be measured precisely. Only with a precise measurement can it be ensured that the rescue basket remains horizontal at all times and can be used safely. In mobile applications, the sensor used must be particularly robust. It must withstand strong vibrations, operate in compliance with EMC standards, and cover a wide temperature range. In the case of an articulating basket arm, mechanical tolerances in the swivel joint must also be accounted for. Even under these conditions, the sensor must deliver reliable and reproducible measurement values so that the ladder system can be operated safely and stably.

Automotive Engineering: Actual Value Measurement on the Steering Cylinder

Product

Absolute linear position transducers, LAS series
Current trends in automotive engineering clearly indicate that an increasing number of driver commands are being transmitted entirely electronically. Electronic systems are replacing complex hydraulic designs, thereby enhancing both ease of use and safety. These solutions require reliable sensors that can withstand the high stresses of mobile applications while delivering the necessary accuracy and functional reliability. Systems such as steer-by-wire are also becoming increasingly common in the field of mobile machinery, e.g., for actual value detection at the steering cylinder or as setpoint specification at the steering column. Sensors also monitor the safe and precise adjustment of the fork in a variety of ways.

Usage

Street sweepers

Product

Potentiometric Angle Sensors, SP-2800 Series
Street sweepers must be able to maneuver around parked vehicles, street furniture, construction sites, and a variety of other obstacles. Four-wheel steering reduces the turning radius of these vehicles. Each vehicle is equipped with two SP2800 series potentiometric angle sensors. These are mounted directly on the steering knuckles of one front wheel and one rear wheel. When the driver turns the steering wheel, a microcomputer adjusts the corresponding front and rear wheel angles to achieve optimal performance. It relies on the signal from the angle sensor for the angle data.
