Measurement and control technology

Precise sensor technology forms the foundation for stable and efficient control processes. Our solutions ensure maximum process reliability for demanding applications.

Measurement and control technology

Sensor solutions for measurement and control technology

In measurement and control technology, precise, interference-free signals are crucial. Novotechnik’s displacement and angle sensors reliably detect movements and positions—for example, in valves, testing equipment, or geotechnical and building monitoring systems. Thanks to their high accuracy, robust design, and versatile interfaces, they are easy to integrate and ensure stable control, reproducible measurement results, and long-lasting system performance.

Usage

Smart positioners for process engineering

Product

Potentiometric angle sensors, SPK-2500 and SP-2800 series
Many processes today require increasingly precise dosing. To ensure that dampers, slides, or valves can be precisely controlled across their entire operating range, accurate position detection is essential. Leitplastik potentiometers are therefore frequently used in intelligent positioners. Due to their high internal resistance, these sensors require very little power. They can also be operated in intermittent mode, in which the potentiometer is active only during the brief measurement process and consumes energy only then. This gives them a significant advantage over magnetic methods, which generally have higher power requirements.

Saturn Research Project: Cassini-Huygens Turntable Control

Product

resistance element
In October 1997, the Cassini-Huygens mission to Saturn was launched. On board were also lead-plastic potentiometers from Novotechnik, which were used for measurement and control tasks. After reaching Saturn, the mother ship released the “Huygens” probe, which then entered the atmosphere of Saturn’s moon Titan and carried out an extensive measurement program there. One of our angle sensors monitored the position of a turntable used for the probe’s navigation. The sensor’s reliable operation in this extreme environment demonstrates the high robustness and precision of the technology—even under the exceptional conditions of an interplanetary mission.

Usage

London Eye

Product

linear position transducers potentiometric linear position transducers, LWG series
The “London Eye” was built on the south bank of the Thames at the turn of the millennium. Accessibility played a central role in its design. To ensure that wheelchair users can enter the gondolas safely and comfortably, the height between the access ramp and the cabin must be continuously adjusted. However, the steel structure of the 135-meter-tall wheel reacts strongly to temperature fluctuations, leading to noticeable changes in position. To compensate for these movements, linear position transducers LWG series precisely measure the current height and continuously control the ramp’s level adjustment. This ensures that access remains stable and reliable—regardless of weather or temperature.
