What is IO-Link?

IO-Link is the world’s first standardized I/O technology (IEC 61131-9) specifically designed for exchanging information with sensors and actuators. This powerful point-to-point communication is based on the proven 3-wire connection and does not impose any additional requirements on the connection technology. As a key technology for the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT), IO-Link enables the transmission of process data, parameter configurations, and diagnostic data. This allows for a reduction in wiring complexity and costs of up to 50% per connection compared to conventional analog setups.

IO-Link offers automatic device configuration and diagnostics for easy implementation and replacement, supported by a broad base of manufacturers and numerous partners. IO-Link devices enable reliable master-to-device communication, allowing for flexible scaling from simple binary on/off devices to intelligent sensors. With its open standard, IO-Link supports modern technologies such as Ethernet, REST API, MQTT, and OPC UA, enabling seamless integration into IoT systems. This makes IO-Link the ideal interface for machine and process optimization in the context of Industry 4.0.
