New MC1-2800 Multiturn Sensor

MagneticMagnetic revolution counting at its best

Following intensive development work, Novotechnik presents the new generation of multiturn sensors: The NOVOTURN MC1-2800 offers an impressive 44 revolutions, an accuracy of 0.5°, and delivers outstanding reliability under extreme conditions (Figure 1). As a result, the new multiturn sensor provides solutions for a wide range of industries. The versatile application possibilities range from detecting steering wheel position in automobiles to determining the position of drive spindles in industrial actuators. The extended measuring range of 44 revolutions (= 15,840°) makes it possible, for example, to achieve significantly longer travel distances when used in linear actuators or cable length sensors.

The technology behind it

The NOVOTURN MC1-2800 miniature multiturn sensor utilizes contactless—and therefore wear-free—rotation counting based on the GMR (Giant Magnetoresistance) effect. Sensors based on this technology provide absolute position values, require no reference signals, and need no power supply or backup battery to detect rotations. As a true “power-on” system, the correct measured value is available immediately after startup over several rotations. Any rotations within the measuring range are detected even when the system is powered off.

Compatibility and Digital Interfaces

The measurement range is transmitted via industry-specific digital interfaces and ensures a resolution of up to 16 bits over 360°. A ratiometric analog output signal is also available. The integration of intelligent interfaces such as CANopen or IO-Link enables smart sensor functions for condition monitoring, such as statistical data on temperature, supply voltage, or operating time. This allows applications to make better decisions independently (e.g., as part of predictive maintenance), operate more effectively, and thus increase productivity.

Durability for demanding environments

Given the demanding requirements of outdoor operations involving mobile machinery and commercial vehicles, the NOVOTURN MC1-2800 is designed to be extremely space-saving and robust. Its encapsulated electronics and protection ratings up to IP67 ensure reliability even under the most adverse conditions. Industry-standard interfaces such as CANopen and CAN SAE J1939 are qualified according to the highest EMC requirements, such as ISO Pulse and interference fields in accordance with ISO 11452, to ensure the suitability of the sensors.
